The Know: Dear Men, If You're Going to Wear Shorts in the City, Here's How

"A man should never wear shorts in the city. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach." Tom Ford

While we typically consider Tom Ford's fashion advice to be paramount, in the heat of the summer, when the concrete buildings radiate off the pavement and the hot steam pouring onto the streets is the same temp as the outside air, we understand that practicality may override even the most traditional fashion rules. So how can you wear shorts in the city without sacrificing style?

1. Buy your favorite style of pants and have them hemmed them to the length you want. We know how discouraging it is when shopping for a perfect pair of shorts; either the thighs are too tight, the legs are too short or the waist just doesn't sit how you like. Instead, buy a pair of pleated cotton pants or a pair of loose-fitting linen trousers you know you love, and all you'll need is a simple hem. Shorts pictured above were previously a pair of cotton trousers from Muji.

2. Accessorize. Whether you have a bandana around your neck or a fanny pack draped across your chest, accessories show that you have a vision for your overall look.

3. Do not wear flip flops! Get yourself a pair of mules.
